Lake Oswego Roots
Small Business owner John Wendland has deep roots in the community of Lake Oswego. He grew up in LO, went to elementary and junior high schools in LO and graduated from Lake Oswego High School where he was Student Body President.
After graduation, John earned a BS in Commerce – Accounting at Santa Clara University, and a Certificate of Retail Studies at the Retail Management Institute also at Santa Clara University. He subsequently spent many years learning all facets of business operations from retail, to wholesale and through to manufacturing.
The pull of Lake Oswego was strong and when John had the chance to buy a full-service bindery manufacturing business, he took the opportunity and moved with wife Lisa and two small daughters Katy and Sara back to his roots. Just as John had done, his daughters went through the LO elementary schools and graduated from LO High School.
Dedicated to Community with Collaborative Leadership

John’s passion for Oswego and his grasp of what makes a community great, led him to serve on the Lake Oswego School Board for eight years, two of those years he served as Chair. His focus, foresight and his leadership on the Board resulted in the development of long-term planning and successful fiscal management during the recession, maintaining small class sizes, improved and steady academic progress, and increased graduation rates.
Since 2019, John has served on the Lake Oswego City Council and is seeking re-election this fall. This year as Council President, John continues to arduously work for the community interests with a non-partisan and collaborative leadership style. Focusing on his original pledge of “Progress Done Right”, John has helped move Lake Oswego forward with capital project investments, improving city services with a high level of customer service outcomes and made sure LO is an engaged and beloved community where people can work, live and play.
A commitment to all children can be seen in John Wendland’s volunteer time. He is Board Chair of the nonprofit Reading Results which helps underserved and underachieving first – third graders reach reading proficiency. The Reading Results program serves 700 metro area kids each year and has an 80% success rate.

Family Man
In his free time, John enjoys hiking local trails, reading current events, hanging with his twenty-something daughters and son-in-law Trevor, taking photos, and is known to bake a noteworthy chocolate chip cookie. John and Lisa, who is a college counselor for high schoolers, love to entertain friends and family. John feels grateful to have family close by. Brother Bob – a physician with Kaiser and his wife Kathleen – a local pre-school teacher, also live in LO.
Continuing His Passion for Lake Oswego
John is running for re-election to LO City Council, where again his big-picture focus, his ability to bring differing views to the table to get consensus and his nonpartisan approach will ensure that Lake Oswego keeps its edge.
